Marabou P.T. Nymph---Callibaetis
By Ted Leeson and Jim Schollmeyer
Description Jim designed this marabou version of the Pheasant Tail Nymph to get a bit more life-like mobility in the fly. Though olive marabou is used here to imitate Callibaetis, the naturals vary in color a good deal, so different shades of marabou and dyed pheasant tail can certainly be used. The style can also be adapted to other mayfly nymphs, particularly those such as Hexagenia that have pronounced abdominal gills.
Recipe HOOK: TMC 3761 #12-#16. THREAD: Olive 8/0. TAIL: Three natural pheasant tail fibers, tied splayed. RIB: Fine copper wire, counterwrapped. UNDERBODY: Small diameter lead wire. ABDOMEN: 2-4 strands olive marabou, twisted in dubbing loop. THORAX: Peacock herl. WINGCASE: Pheasant tail fibers. LEGS: Tips of pheasant tail fibers from wing case.
Tying Instructions With the exception of the abdomen, tie this fly as you would a Pheasant Tail Nymph. Tie in the tail, create a dubbing loop of olive marabou, and wrap the abdomen. Tie in pheasant tail for the wing case, wrap peacock herl for the thorax, and pull the pheasant tail over to create the wing case. Tie down the pheasant tail so the fibers slant back toward the rear of the fly, and trim them to create the impression of legs.
