2008 MFFC CONSERVATION FUND

The recipients of Michigan Fly Fishing Club's 2008 conservation grants have been announced. The $16,500 budgeted for this year's granting program has been allocated to the following organizations and projects:

  • Upper Manistee River Restoration Committee
    Grant: $3,000.00
    Project: Replace and service sediment traps and stabilize and eliminate sources of sedimentation on the Upper Manistee River between Cameron Bridge and Mancelona roads.

  • Huron Pines Resource Conservation and Development Area Council
    Grant: $3,000.00 Project: Replace Sucker Creek Road perched culverts on the Black River in Alcona County with a bottomless, arched culvert.

  • Huron Pines Resource Conservation and Development Area Council, $500.00
    Grant: $4,000.00 Project: Place large woody debris (LWD) in-stream habitat structures at various locations along the main branch of the AuSable and develop a "River Keeper" position to engage more people and organizations in the conservation effort.

  • Conservation Resource Alliance Grant: $1,000.00
    Project: RiverCare Kids project support, focused on teaching, sharing, and creating opportunities for children to become involved in protecting rivers in the northwest Lower Peninsula.

  • Conservation Resource Alliance Grant: $2,500.00
    Enhance fish habitat through the installation of instream habitat and bank stabilization at six locations along the Big Sable River.

  • Upper Black River Restoration Committee
    Grant: $3,000.00 Project: Place large woody debris (LWD) in-stream habitat structures at various locations along the Black River and major tributaries to enhance brook trout habitat.

Serving on the club's 2008 Conservation Committee were: Eric Center, chair; Board Member Jeff Parker, Past President Kevin Lipp, Terry Drinkwine and Don Oehring.
