The Michigan Fly Fishing Club returns to Wa Wa Sum for the annual Family Outing. This event is open to members and their children or grandchildren. Individual members or couples are also welcome.
Camp Wa Wa Sum is a Michigan State University conference center and a research facility used by the departments of Fisheries and Wildlife and Forestry. It is located on the AuSable River, 6 miles east of Grayling. The name Wa Wa Sum means "plain view" in the Chippewa language and was given to the camp in 1905 by Chief David Shoppenagon, an AuSable River guide and outdoorsman. The first building was constructed of red pine and tamarack logs in 1897-98 by Rubin Babbit, an AuSable woodsman who later became Michigan's first wildlife officer.
Wa Wa Sum is a great place for a family vacation. Bring your vices – We’ll be tying flies in the evening. We will also have some Club vices so the kids can join in the act. The AuSable River and surrounding Crawford County offer many opportunities for fishing, canoeing, and sightseeing. See the Grayling Visitors Bureau website for more ideas: http://www.grayling-mi.com.
A simple buffet will greet guests as they arrive on Thursday evening. On Friday night we will have a Great Lakes Fish Boil, a traditional logging camp staple. Saturday night’s dinner will be a barbeque, including giant hamburgers, as described in George Griffith’s book, For the Love of Trout. The exact menu remains to be determined.
Full breakfasts will be served Friday and Saturday. Sunday’s breakfast will be continental.
Because members are likely to be away from the Lodge during the day, lunches will not be provided. Members will be encouraged to pack lunches or visit the local restaurants or taverns.
Many hands make light work, therefore everyone in attendance will be required to volunteer for a shift or two in the kitchen, either as a cook or on KP. Working together will allow the Club to keep costs down, encourage social interaction between members, and ensure that no one gets stuck washing all the dishes.
I will prepare an article for the Hatch and website that will give full details, plus begin sign-ups at an upcoming meeting.
