Don't forget to buy your new 2009/2010 Michigan Fishing License! Your old one expires March 31st.
The 2009 Spring Steelhead outing will be held April 3rd-5th on the Muskegon River in Newaygo, MI. For those who may be unfamiliar with the "Mighty Mo" starts as small outflow of Houghton Lake and travels 227 miles to it's confluence into Muskegon Lake and finally into Lake Michigan. One of the larger rivers in the state it offers Steelhead from October thru May. Spring fishing can be a bit touchy depending on water levels which can change overnight by several feet. One nice thing however, even if water levels rise drastically clarity remains good and fishing typically gets better.
Access is not a problem for waders. There are numerous access spots between Croton Dam down to Newaygo (which is the most popular stretch). As well, boat anglers have several launches to choose from; Croton, Pine Street, Thornapple, Henning Park, and New Bridge. Further downstream there are also many good access spots.
We will be staying at Cronks Oakridge Motel in Newaygo. They also own a restraint that's located across the parking lot from the hotel. We will meet here in the mornings for breakfast and to discuss the game plan for the day.
There are also a couple other rivers within a half hour to 45 minutes of Newaygo if some would like to try different water during the weekend. The Grand is 30 minutes south, the PM and White are north 15 and 40 minutes respectively.
We're planning on a guest speaker Saturday evening; stay tuned.
Cost is $0.00 at this time.
